He added: "That's the magic of filmmaking. And not to be corny about it, but that's the one thing that, as a filmmaker, I don't think you ever get over it, is we put our hearts and minds, and everything we've got into these movies and then to see an audience respond to it while I sit in the back is really an amazing experience."

Russell took a 14-year hiatus from filmmaking before returning in 2016 with "I Am Wrath," an action thriller starring John Travolta. The two reunited for 2022's "Paradise City," which also featured Bruce Willis in one of his final on-screen roles. Russell's final project was "Witchboard," a 2024 horror film about a cursed game that awakens a dark force, on which he served as writer, director, and producer.
