Conversely, Merck & Co., Inc., based in Rahway, New Jersey, originated as an American subsidiary of the German parent company before being sequestered and made completely independent following World War I. Today, they operate as entirely separate, unrelated corporate entities. Due to historical trademark litigation, Merck KGaA holds the exclusive rights to the name "Merck" globally, whereas the American firm must operate under the brand name Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) outside of the United States and Canada.
